Kayak trip to Terrace BC
We have just returned from a short kayaking trip to the Terrace area of BC. Terrace is a small logging town in north West BC with some amazing scenery, wildlife and whitewater kayaking. Terrace is renowned for its fishing and the Bears that roam the local hills. Terrace is also home to the rare Kermode Bear, an all white albino variety. We made the drive up to the area to find some kayaking adventures for our latest kayaking film.
Terrace is roughly a 16hr drive from Vancouver, but is well worth the effort. Terrace has a strong whitewater community that was amazingly helpful with info on their local runs and made us feel extremely welcome in their town. Thanks again to everyone in Terrace for your hospitality.
One particular classic we found was the Davis Creek 30mins outside Prince Rupert. Davis Creek is a perfect Terrace day out. First, you must paddle across the Skeena River, which is possibly a km in width and tidally affected in its lower reaches. The paddle across took around 45 minutes but will vary depending on the tide and whether the wind is blowing. We saw scores of seals at this point that followed us across the river.
Once on the opposite bank you must begin to hike the river right bank. A rough hiking trail can be found and should be followed until a small lake is reached. The hike took us roughly an hour and a half due to heavy mincing. A short bushwhack down to the right of the small lake takes you back to the river.
The river starts out meandering and flat with spectacular views, but soon begins to loose gradient at a rapid pace over some huge granite slabs. From here on in we found 10 or so amazing slab rapids with clean running lines. We ran everything on the river with a lost paddle as the only casualty.
We found the Davis run to be a fantastic day out, well worth the effort, amazing scenery, rapids and wildlife make this run a classic adventure boating day out.
Ricky Lambert, Roger Fehr, Daniel Nobblet, Tom Emerson and Steve Rogers paddled the Davis creek run.
Thanks to Pat Colgan, Roger Fehr for all the info on the local runs.
Thanks to Roger Fehr for the extra images in this article..........
