Making the most of the Sunshine Coast
With so much time spent crashing down whitewater creeks this summer, It was a welcome relief to get out in a kayak in a stress free environment. A visit to Powell River gave opportunity get amongst some epic sunbathing and extremely sunny weather on the Sunshine Coast.
We headed out with the rest of the eager crowd for the August long weekend. A few long queues in the ferry parking lots were a necessity to get to the scenic spot in Powell River. One ferry to Langdale and another to Saltery Bay got us there in (only!) 8 hours. Still, getting there is sometimes half the fun.
We arrived late on Saturday in Powell River, found a great camping spot on the beach, had a fire and drank a few beers while watching the sun set.
Next day, we headed out to do some sea kayaking around the various islands in the area. Given more time, this would be a great place to do a multi-day kayak trip and camp on all the island beaches. However, with just a short day trip available, we headed over to one of the islands and spent the afternoon Beach ratching and sunbathing with the locals.
The Sunshine coast is an amazing place to explore by kayak with endless secluded islands and beaches. Next time we will definitely return with loaded kayaks ready for a multi day camping trip. With storage hatches in both ends of the kayak there seems no end to the amount of Beer that can be carried upon each trip :-)
